Prep Hoops Roundup: Morgan outlasts Layton Christian in small-school battle

MORGAN — Morgan led Layton Christian 39-33 at the half and outscored the Eagles during a comeback bid in a 27-26 fourth quarter, holding on for a 79-74 home win in a small-school battle Friday.

Trey Miles led Morgan with 19 points and three 3-pointers while Stetson Anderson scored 17 with five treys. Cade Russell added 15 points, including 8 of 8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Sano Gasana scored a game-high 25 for Layton Christian. Micah Petty added 19 and Nicolas Alvarez netted 11, each making three treys for the Eagles.

SYRACUSE 56, CLEARFIELD 51

SYRACUSE — Clearfield took a 27-22 halftime lead at Syracuse, but the Titans reversed that deficit in the second half on the way to the Region 1 win.

Brock Gilbert scored a game-high 19 to lead Syracuse. Rudy Casias added 11.

Carter Buchi scored 14 points for Clearfield. Devon Poll added 10 for the Falcons.

EAST 72, ROY 40

ROY — East led Roy 30-20 at the half, then outscored the Royals 24-3 in the third quarter for a big win.

Only three Royals scored in the game. Ben McBride led Roy with 17 points, while Kobe Schriver hit four 3-pointers for his 12 points and Alex Lamb added 11.

JUAN DIEGO 85, OGDEN 42

DRAPER — Ogden trailed Juan Diego 29-7 after one quarter and 47-15 at the half in the Region 11 loss.

Keon Berghout scored 16 to lead Ogden while Cooper Jones and Isaiah Coria netted nine points apiece. Berghout, Jones and Coria each made two 3-pointers.

STANSBURY 52, BEN LOMOND 34

STANSBURY PARK — Ben Lomond trailed Stansbury 35-21 at halftime and could only manage 13 points in the second half in a Region 11 contest.

Stephon Watson and Sudan Puk each scored eight points to lead the Scots.

SPRINGVILLE 64, BOUNTIFUL 56

BOUNTIFUL — Bountiful took a 49-48 lead over Springville into the fourth quarter but poor shooting and turnovers doomed the Braves in the final frame.

Brig Willard led Bountiful with 21 points and three 3-pointers. Camron Chism added 15 with two treys.

WEST JORDAN 67, VIEWMONT 61

BOUNTIFUL — Viewmont led 47-45 going into the fourth quarter but West Jordan ran away from the Vikings in the final stanza to claim a road win.

Spencer Mackay had 20 points to lead Viewmont. Josh Mordue scored 12 and Chandler Cox added 11.

UTAH MILITARY 47, APA-WEST VALLEY 38

WEST VALLEY CITY — Utah Military led wire-to-wire in a road win at American Prep Academy-West Valley.

Jacob Ogden scored 15 to lead UMA. James Summers netted 13 and Dante Huerta added 10 for the Thunderbirds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

FREMONT 52, WEBER 46

PLEASANT VIEW — Fremont held Weber to two first-quarter points and picked up the Region 1 road win.

Emma Calvert led Fremont with 15 points before fouling out. Haylee Doxey and Karlie Valdez each added nine for the Silver Wolves, with all of Valdez’s points coming from the free-throw line.

Megan Smoot scored 15 for the Warriors, including 5 of 6 from the charity stripe, prior to fouling out. Taylor Morris added 10 points.

The officials called 44 personal fouls in the game. The teams combined for three disqualifications and 37 made free throws on 54 attempts.

LAYTON 37, DAVIS 34

KAYSVILLE — Layton outscored Davis 24-18 in the second half to grab the region road win and move to 2-0 in Region 1 play.

Kaitlyn Viator led all scorers with 14 points for Layton.

Sydni Oviatt and Valerie Kunzler each scored eight points for Davis.

BOUNTIFUL 43, MOUNTAIN CREST 42

BOUNTIFUL — After trailing 23-21 at halftime, Bountiful outscored Mountain Crest 8-4 in the third quarter to take the lead and grab the home win.

Sam Salmon led Bountiful with 11 points. Dashani Purcell scored nine on three 3-pointers and Tashena Ashby added eight. The Braves enter Region 5 play next week with a 2-10 record.

WOODS CROSS 53, TAYLORSVILLE 48

TAYLORSVILLE — Woods Cross built a 37-29 lead going into the fourth quarter and held off Taylorsville for the road win.

Sara Noel led Woods Cross with 24 and four 3-pointers. Olivia Barton added 13 points for the Wildcats.
